Best Boulder Photo Session Locations (Beyond Chautauqua)
If you've looked up photo spots in Boulder, Chautauqua's probably come up more than once — and I love it too, it's one of my favorite backdrops in town. The crowds are real, though, especially on summer weekends. Here are a few more spots I love just as much — even more, if you're looking for something different. (Every session I run on open space is permitted and insured, so wherever we land, it's above board.)
Close and Easy
NCAR Trailhead
The lot here is enormous, so unlike Chautauqua, you're not gambling on a spot. Rolling trail, sweeping Flatirons views, gorgeous early light — my go-to for sunrise sessions.
Eben G. Fine Park
Right at the mouth of Boulder Canyon, park at the end of Arapahoe and you're steps from the water. Granite boulders, cottonwoods overhead, Boulder Creek right there — an easy, in-town river spot with zero hiking required.
Wonderland Lake
Free parking, an easy flat loop in North Boulder, and on a calm day the lake reflects the Flatirons almost like a mirror. Good for families with little kids or anyone who doesn't want a hike attached to their photos.
A Different Look
South Mesa
On the south side of town, a short walk from the lot to a wide-open view over the valley with the Flatirons catching the last light. There are often other photographers here, but there's plenty of room and enough angles that you can get a few very different looks just by moving a few feet! Best around sunset.
Lost Gulch Overlook
About 15-25 minutes up Flagstaff Road, a short but rocky walk to a cliff-top view stretching toward the Indian Peaks. Completely different feel from anything else on this list — high, open, dramatic. Not the spot for toddlers on the move, but great for couples or families with older kids.

Worth Planning Around
Betasso Preserve
Quieter and more varied than almost anywhere else on this list — open meadows give way to foothills and mountain backdrops, sweeping trails wind through stands of evergreen, and there's a real overlook into Boulder from up top. Even the air feels different up here.
For the Adventurous
Walker Ranch
Down to South Boulder Creek and back is 3.6 miles round trip, with a real descent and a steep push back out — no need to do the full 8-mile loop to get the payoff. You'll pass old homestead ruins on the way down, and the creek itself is the reward: rushing water, a canyon feel, nothing like the rest of this list. I build this into adventure sessions for couples who want something with real texture.
