Maternity Sessions in Boulder and Summit County

Packages and Pricing

I'll guide you into a few simple setups, then keep shooting as you relax: laughing with your partner, an older kid with their ear on your belly, a slow walk along the creek. We'll go somewhere outside at the time of day when the light is softest. Wear a gown or your favorite jeans. Both work.

No payment yet. I’ll follow up personally to plan the details.

What your session looks like, start to finish.

1. Pick your date. Choose a day when you'll be 28 to 34 weeks along. Your belly is showing by then, and walking around is still comfortable.

2. We plan it. I'll send my style guide and suggest a few spots based on the light and how much walking you're up for. We can talk it through on a quick call if you'd like.

3. The session. About an hour, outside close to golden hour, at home, or some of each. I’ll guide you into a few setups and keep shooting in between. We take breaks whenever you need them.

4. Your gallery. You'll get a preview gallery to choose your favorites. Send them within a week, and your finished images arrive in 3 to 4 weeks.

Every Session Includes

Pregnant mom in a green outfit standing on rocks in the foothills
Expecting couple holding each other by a lake at golden hour
  • A call before the session, if you'd like one, to plan the spot and timing

  • My style guide, including what photographs well on a bump and where to buy or rent if you want something new

  • Spots with an easy walk in, picked for where the light falls at that hour

  • A few guided setups, then room for everything in between

  • Every final image edited by hand, one at a time, for a crafted look that brings you back to how things looked and felt in the moment, not a one-size-fits-all preset filter

Come on your own, bring your partner, or bring the whole crew for part of it. Outside, I pick places with an easy walk in, like a creek, a meadow or your own backyard, so nobody is overdoing it at 32 weeks. Some of my favorite sessions start outside and finish at home on the couch or in the nursery. I’ll give direction where it helps and keep shooting the moments in between, like the laugh right after a pose falls apart.

Prints and albums

Most photos live on a phone and get looked at twice. The ones on a wall or in an album get looked at every day. I offer albums and framed prints through a professional lab, and I'll help you choose the images and sizes so they look right in your home.

“Susan also helped in a followup request to assist in a triptych of the photos I had printed for my home — no fuss with a fast response from her to help me solve it!”
— Jess D.

Hello, there! I’m Susan.

Susan, owner and photographer of Afar Creative, holding her toddler in a golden field

I'm a mom too, so I know the last weeks of pregnancy are not comfortable. I keep these sessions easy: short walks, breaks whenever you need them, and direction that works with your body as it is today. I came to photography through film, and I still shoot like I'm telling a story: a few set-up moments, then everything that happens in between. I split my time between Boulder and Breckenridge and photograph families from the Front Range up to Summit County.

Everyone Asks…

"We did our newborn session at our house… Susan was very patient and worked around fussiness and feeding. When our toddler got home, Susan got some great shots of the two kids and of the four of us."
